Conversely, if you have enough control of the transporter that you can beam people away by firing upon them, couldn’t you just… beam them away without firing upon them? And couldn’t you beam them into the inside of a box floating in the middle of space instead of your transporter room?
Nitpicks aside, that finale did deliver some good catharsis.
What makes the shoot-to-transport invention even stranger is that there is actually precedent.
The criminal gang that Picard infiltrates used such a device to grab people. And the Son’a used drones firing isolinear tags to lock-on to people and beam them out.
Conversely, if you have enough control of the transporter that you can beam people away by firing upon them, couldn’t you just… beam them away without firing upon them? And couldn’t you beam them into the inside of a box floating in the middle of space instead of your transporter room?
